This book deals with present and future uses of artificial intelligence and machine learning, as pertaining to the sciences related to the Earth. AI/ML is currently advancing at a rapid clip, bringing new capabilities to the table. We explore the possibilities that open up for scientists as a result, as well as some of the associated challenges, especially in the disciplines concerning the atmosphere, oceans, lithosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere.

About the author

Michel Speiser is the Chief Data Scientist for the International Centre for Earth Simulation (ICES) Foundation, an independent scientific non-profit foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to this, he was a research staff member at IBM Research - Zurich. He holds a PhD from ETH Zurich, and Masters degrees in mathematical sciences (EPFL), complex adaptive systems (Chalmers University of Technology), and computer science and engineering (EPFL).
